US Reps. Rashida Tlaib and Shri Thanedar want to invoke the 25th Amendment after President Donald Trump’s threats against Iran.
MICHIGAN—Two members of Congress from Michigan are calling for President Donald Trump to be removed from office after he publicly threatened genocide against Iran.
US Reps. Rashida Tlaib and Shri Thanedar both issued statements this week condemning Trump’s latest rhetoric and urging Vice President JD Vance, Trump’s cabinet, and a majority of Congress to invoke the 25th Amendment and force Trump’s removal from office.
“This maniac should be removed from office,” Tlaib posted to X on Tuesday.
“It’s clear he’s unfit to be president,” Thanedar also posted to X on Tuesday.
The comments are in response to a Truth Social post from Trump in which warned that “a whole civilization will die tonight” if Iran failed to meet his demand to reopen the Strait of Hormuz—part of a broader escalation from Trump that has included US airstrikes and rising civilian casualties.
Thanedar and Tlaib are urging Congress to intervene before Trump orders additional strikes in Iran—including by invoking the 25th Amendment, clear language in the US Constitution which allows for the removal of a president deemed unable to carry out the duties of the office.
Thanedar described Trump’s remarks as a threat to “slaughter” tens of millions of people. Tlaib, meanwhile, pointed to recent bombings that have already killed civilians—including children—and accused the Trump administration of escalating toward “genocide.”
In recent weeks, Trump has repeatedly threatened to destroy Iranian infrastructure, including bridges and energy facilities. But experts and international leaders have warned that targeting civilian infrastructure could violate international law and potentially constitute war crimes.
For Michiganders, the fallout is already being felt closer to home.

The conflict has disrupted global oil markets, sending gas prices climbing and raising concerns about broader economic instability. At the same time, the risk of a wider regional war—and the possibility of US troop involvement—has heightened fears about what comes next.
