State officials are sending out a second shipment of supplies for the “Take Control of Your Birth Control” program.
MICHIGAN—Free birth control and contraceptives are still widely available this year at more than 300 locations statewide through Michigan’s “Take Control of Your Birth Control” initiative.
Launched last year, this state-funded program from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s administration provides over-the-counter oral contraceptives, emergency contraception, condoms, and educational resources to Michiganders who need them—regardless of their insurance coverage.
Over the last three months, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has distributed over 34,000 doses of emergency contraceptives, 34,000 oral birth control pills, and nearly 172,000 condoms across the state. And more supplies are now en route.
State officials this week announced a second shipment of supplies—with plans to provide birth control, condoms, and other forms of contraception to at least another 25,000 people statewide.
Distribution sites are located in every county and include various community partners, local health departments, MDHHS offices, and federally qualified health centers. Michiganders just need to stop in and request supplies, which are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

“Every Michigander deserves access to affordable birth control, contraception and other reproductive health care,” Whitmer said in a statement this week. “Here in Michigan, we believe that you deserve the freedom to make your own decision about your own body, and we will keep fighting like hell to expand access to reproductive health care and lower costs for Michiganders.”
Help Beyond Supplies
Beyond offering free contraception, state officials are also focused on helping Michiganders navigate insurance options to secure long-term access to affordable family planning services.
Through the Plan First! program, launched in 2023, Michiganders who meet income requirements can access family planning coverage, including birth control and STI testing.
