A woman dropped off what appeared to be a human skull at a Goodwill donation center in Chelsea, according to police.
While on patrol, an officer was dispatched to the store for a report of a suspicious item received at the drop-off location. Upon arrival, the complainant told police they “recently discovered what appeared to be a human skull, wrapped in a shirt,” according to the Chelsea Police Department report published in The Sun Times News, a Washtenaw County newspaper.
“The officer took possession of the item and noted that there were no visible damage or uncharacteristic holes in the item,” according to the police report.
The skull, which was dropped off on Jan. 26, was taken as evidence to the Chelsea Police Department, which consulted with the medical examiner’s office and turned the skull over to officials there, according to the police report.
The case is pending investigation to determine the circumstances and origin of the item, according to the police report.
On Jan. 28, the Chelsea Police Department posted photos of the woman who donated the items, saying, “Chelsea PD would like to speak with her to confirm her decision.”
“One of the items appears to have been accidentally included in the donations,” according to the post, which did not clarify the item.
Chelsea police did not immediately respond to further questions and requests for the report. A person who picked up the phone on Tuesday, Feb. 3, at the Washtenaw County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the skull was brought to them and said an investigation is ongoing.
