MICHIGAN—Michigan State University students held on to each other Tuesday night as they laid flowers around campus and illuminated green luminaries to remember everything the East Lansing campus lost a year ago.
The campus’ iconic Beaumont Tower tolled out three bell chimes at the same time that three students were killed the night of Feb. 13, 2023, in a mass shooting: Alexandria Verner, 20; Brian Fraser, 20; and Arielle Anderson, 19.
Five other students were seriously injured, but the impact of the shooting spans well-beyond campus as alumni and members of the local community joined students, faculty and staff to honor the university community and try to heal together.
MSU did not hold classes on Tuesday, but provided reflective spaces on campus throughout the day, as well as the opportunity for service projects. MSU Police Lt. Kim Parviainen and the department’s comfort dog, River, were on hand Tuesday morning in both sites where the shootings took place, Berkey Hall and the MSU Union, to provide support for students.
