Nobody voted on these. Nobody enforces them. But if you spend enough time around Michigan stoners, you’ll start to notice everyone playing by the same set of unspoken rules.
MICHIGAN—Michigan’s weed scene grew up fast.
Prices dropped. Dispensaries multiplied. New smokers joined the rotation.
And somewhere along the way, a quiet code of conduct started to form.
Nobody actually writes this stuff down—which, yes, makes this article a little ironic.
But if you spend enough time in Michigan’s cannabis world—at dispensaries, festivals, or just passing a joint around the backyard—you’ll start to notice the same habits separating the seasoned smokers from the rookies. It’s not a rulebook. It’s more like a field guide.
If you know, you know. And if you don’t, you’re about to find out.
Consider this your unofficial cheat sheet:
1. Stop chasing THC percentages.
Dispensary shelves are packed with products pushing past 30% THC. You can even sort through online menus in order of “potency” to find the highest numbers. But longtime smokers know that THC alone doesn’t decide the experience. Harvest dates, terpene profiles, and cure matter just as much. The loudest weed on paper isn’t always the one you remember.
2. If you’re driving, you’re not smoking.
Legal weed didn’t make impaired driving legal in Michigan.
If you’re the ride, be the ride. The sesh will still be there when you get home.
3. Don’t show up to the dispensary five minutes before it closes.
By then, most budtenders have already cleaned, counted, and mentally clocked out. Walking in right before close to browse every jar and ask a dozen questions is a quick way to get a rushed recommendation. If you know that you’re cutting it close, order ahead and keep it quick.
4. Tip your budtender.
They’re not just ringing you up; they’re guiding you through terpenes, potencies, and the difference between five versions of the same strain name. A few bucks goes a long way, especially when someone is actively guiding you toward products that match your vibe.
If you’re grabbing a small online order, don’t stress about it. But if someone took time to walk you through options or answer your questions, it’s just good karma to show a little love.
5. Match the smoke when you can.
If someone regularly brings the weed, it’s good form to return the favor eventually.
Nobody is keeping score, but everyone notices the person who never contributes.
6. Ask before you spark up at someone’s house.
Legal weed didn’t make every Michigan home weed-friendly. Some folks have kids, pets, landlords, or just don’t want their place smelling like bud. Reading the room goes a long way.
It should go without saying, but the same rule also applies when you’re a passenger in someone else’s vehicle. Hotboxing around kids, pets, or anyone who didn’t sign up for it isn’t cool.
7. Don’t torch the whole bowl at a group sesh.
Joints are usually better for groups anyway.
But if you’re smoking a bowl, corner it. Take a small slice, not the whole pie. Lighting the entire bowl in one go is basically telling everyone else in the circle that you forgot how sharing works.

8. Clean your glass every once in a while.
Nobody wants to hit a mystery bong that tastes like last month’s resin.
If you’re hosting, fresh water is the bare minimum.
9. Respect the newbie.
Everyone starts somewhere. Not everyone knows the difference between limonene and linalool or how hard a 10 mg edible can hit. Lower the pressure and let people learn at their own pace.
Today’s newbie is tomorrow’s smoke buddy.
10. Don’t pretend to know everything about weed.
Cannabis culture moves fast. New strains drop, new products pop up, and new research and technological advances arrive all the time. Even longtime smokers are still learning. I’ve been covering Michigan’s cannabis industry for years and I’m still discovering new things all the time.
If you’ve got a hard rule or a pet peeve that I missed, shoot me a note. This list can grow.
