Michigan delegates for the Democratic National Convention are endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign—ensuring that she has enough support to officially become the Democratic Party’s nominee.
MICHIGAN—All of Michigan’s delegates for next month’s Democratic National Convention in Chicago are standing behind Vice President Kamala Harris to become the Democratic nominee for president, solidifying what appears to be a sure-fire path for Harris to get the nomination.
During a virtual meeting Tuesday, a majority of the state’s 138 delegates “overwhelmingly” voted to endorse Harris as the Democratic nominee, according to the Michigan Democratic Party.
Although the delegates are free to vote for the candidate of their choice when the Democratic Party formally picks its nominee at the next month’s National Convention, the early endorsement from Michigan—paired with the support of more than 3,000 other delegates nationwide—all but ensures that Harris will go on to face off against ex-President Donald Trump in November.
“Our party and our delegation are built on values of hard work, community, and building a brighter future—and that is exactly what Kamala Harris represents,” Michigan Democratic Party Chairwoman Lavora Barnes said in a statement announcing the joint endorsement. “She has been a tireless fighter for reproductive rights, workers’ rights, and growing the middle class.”
A running analysis from the Associated Press shows that Vice President Kamala Harris has already secured the support of enough Democratic delegates to secure the nomination. No other candidate has been named by a delegate and Harris now appears to have the backing of more than 3,100 delegates—far more than the 1,976 delegates needed to become the nominee.
Most of Michigan’s top politicians have also publicly voiced support for Harris’ newborn presidential campaign, including Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist, Attorney General Dana Nessel, Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks, House Speaker Joe Tate, and six of the seven Democratic members of the US House who represent Michigan.
“Since the day she took office, Harris has clearly shown her dedication to Michiganders, their values, and their families,” Barnes said in a statement. “As a prosecutor and senator, she worked to keep her community safe from those who sought to harm it—now, as our nominee, she is doing the exact same thing as she fights to beat Trump and his MAGA agenda once again. As delegates across the country rally behind Harris, we are excited to continue to unite this party so we can come together in November and elect Democrats up and down the ballot.”
